Valentine’s Day can be such a perfect opportunity to open discussions around love with your children, even from a very young age! I still remember how awkward Valentine’s Day was in high school! But in recent years, Valentine’s Day has become about so much more than just sending roses to your secret crush. Now there’s Galentine’s Day, and all kinds of fun ways to celebrate, so why not make it fun for your kids?

I am a young mum to 3 beautiful daughters, originally from Sydney, Australia - now living in country NSW with my partner of over 10 years and our girls.

4. Mummy-son or daughter date!
You could really go to the next level with this one or just keep it simple! There’s the old classic movie date, which no kid will ever say no to, or if you’ve got really little ones, you could do something as simple as having a tea party together! Even get creative and do something like a fun outdoor activity such as horse riding for older kids, or going out on a bush walk. Take a camera and you could get some nice Polaroids or have photos developed from the day using a disposable camera. However - since this is also supposed to be fun for you too, my advice is to try not to settle and take them to a kid’s playground or indoor play centre, do something you will also enjoy doing with them!
5. Valentine’s Day special family breakfast or dinner
The awesome thing about Valentine’s Day is that it doesn’t come with the expectation to see a whole bunch of family like Christmas or birthdays. I do love that about those occasions, but the good thing about Valentine’s Day and having your little one all to yourself means you can really make it all about just your own little family. It can truly be an extra special day to show you care and love one another, and you’ll go to that extra effort of recognising it. As a mum of 3, I know the days are long but the years are short. Families really do go through so much together, day in and day out. Through all the terrible-two tantrums and nervous first-day-of-school moments, at the end of the day we’re there for each other. Valentine’s Day can be a perfect day to stop and recognise that.
6. Have a pamper day!
Valentine’s Day is all about love, right? So why not educate them around self-love and self-care! Plus, if you get it all set up right, you can take turns doing things for each other. For example, applying a face mask to each other. Or for little kids, painting each other’s nails. It might be messy, but in the years to come, it’ll be such a nice traditional thing to keep doing for each other! Why not set up a cute pamper area or pamper tent with some nail polish, face masks, and essential oil rollers to enjoy together!

My first memories of Valentine’s Day growing up was back in high school when we could buy a little $1 rose and have it sent to our crush during class time. Eek! What a time right!? But now Valentine’s Day has become so much more than just a way to tell your secret crush at school that you like him (or her)! Now people use Valentine’s Day as a way to express their love for other family members and good friends like Galentine’s Day, so it can be a super sweet thing to celebrate with your kids! Plus look, I’m not a parent to teenagers (yet) as mine are still toddlers, but I know my 4 year old has plenty of questions about life, and celebrating Valentine’s Day with your child could be a great ice breaker for love questions in years to come!
So let’s get into it! Here are 6 super fun ideas for how you can make Valentine’s Day fun with your little one/s!
2. Gift baskets
As a parent I’ve slowly come to realise there is never an end to how much we can buy for our kids. But instead of buying things randomly on a Tuesday arvo, why not make it more intentional and save buying new items for times like Valentine’s Day? As I said above, Valentine’s Day is such a great opportunity to teach your little one about love and healthy relationships. Giving them a gift basket is not only an opportunity to do something thoughtful and sweet for them to have as a tradition growing up, but it’s also a perfect time to gift them books about love which can start conversations about love.

1. Bake and decorate cookies!
You can really take this to the cringe-worthy level with your kids which is what I think makes it so fun to do with them on Valentine’s Day! Pink cookies, love-heart shaped cookies, cookie decorating with pink sprinkles and icing, honestly baking cookies is great because it’s a great chance to connect with your little one but also super fun! Plus, if it becomes a tradition for years to come it’s such a perfect chance for them to open up with you and chat about love.
3. Crafts
I didn’t used to think much of Valentine’s Day crafts, but my gosh, there’s soo many cute Valentine’s Day craft ideas out there for kids! Things like cards in the shape of love-hearts, clay with moulds of their baby feet on them, the list goes on! Just do a quick Pinterest search and you’ll see there are tonnes of fun craft activities you can do with your little one. Plus, yet again it’s a perfect opportunity to turn off the screen time and start some conversations around love!
