Plus, blogs can be a perfect way to boost a small business. Say you make dog treats as a side hustle, you could have a website with a weekly blog post on caring for and treating your pooch. You could even send it out as a weekly email, or also called a newsletter. This could take your business to the next level. Or, maybe you have a cool podcast idea. Well, why not also make those podcast episodes into blog pages on a website and showcase your latest episodes in a weekly email? People seem to think email is dead, but as mentioned by Noah Khan in his book Million Dollar Weekend, it’s actually got the highest rate of investment (ROI) than anything else including social media pages or Facebook. An email is like a little personal message that you are guaranteed to have sent to that person directly, almost like a message, but with an email address instead of a text.
I personally think everyone should have a blog. We’ve all got passions beyond work, and a blog is a perfect place for them! You could talk about gardening, home decor, lifestyle tips, beauty, you name it. Shopping. Everything! So if I’ve managed to convince you on getting started, keep reading for the 5 steps to creating a blog!
Step 1. Choose your niche.
As I said above, you can write a blog about anything you want. It can be something profitable and be used for a business, or it could be a hobby (that could potentially be used as a side hustle, too). You don’t want to just write about anything and everything - part of the fun of this is building a brand and a community for people to read your blogs. And part of that is deciding on a certain topic or niche (p.s. there are hundreds - don't fret over this too much, go with your gut and what comes most naturally to you to write about). You can definitely go outside the lines with it even despite choosing a niche, but you still want an overall theme as sort of an anchor for you.
See the following examples of popular niches:
gardening
Cooking and recipes
Travel
Business
Entertainment
Pets and animals
Fashion & beauty
Health and fitness
Parenting
Finance
…the list goes on!! You could even ask chat GPT to help you.
Step 2. Make a website
First things first you need a landing page, so for a blog that means a website. That’s pretty much all blogs are - posts on a website. These days, you don’t have to worry about code or anything. We’ve all seen ads to make your own website using templates, and there’s hundreds of different platforms to do this now. If you find it tricky, there's always tonnes of tutorials on Youtube. Even AI can automatically build one for you! I highly recommend Hostinger - you can use this link here to start building your website through them from as little as $3/month. They offer a website builder option with AI assistance if you want it, or the classic Wordpress option - but that’s more for tech savvy’s and not always necessary. Just choose your template and start having fun playing with colours, fonts and pictures on your new website to build your brand!
P.s. You don’t really have to have a website. You could blog, and send them out as newsletters via email! But, having a landing page is a really great anchor point for you to have to keep track of your blogs and enjoy the process.
Step 3. Get writing!
Okay now you have your niche and website, you probably have some ideas starting to come to mind on what you’re going to write about. So, start writing! You could make a new folder in your notes on your phone specifically for your blog ideas and start writing. Don’t stress too much about making it perfect around grammar because at the end of the day, most blogs are conversational - even for business topics. They might sound more formal if you’re writing for a business or a company, but generally speaking, you’ll want it to flow easily and make the person reading it feel like you’re speaking directly to them. Which you are! So be yourself and don’t be afraid to bring your personality into it. That’s what makes it unique and what will draw people to it!
I highly recommend Fin Savvy Panda’s Treasure Map To Blogging Success in 30 days (click this link to download it)! In my opinion it is worth every penny. Her guide is an absolute gold mine, it gives you so much detail and guidance, all able to be done easily within 30 days. It didn’t even take me that long, and honestly - I’d be lost without the small details she gives and I’d probably feel like I’d have to start all over again if I hadn’t used it!
Step 4. Get traffic onto your blog.
If you just want to write a blog for fun as a creative outlet, and you don’t want to worry too much about people actually finding it and reading it, then don’t worry about this step too much. Even sending it via an email subscription to friends & family and leaving it out there on Google might be all you want to do! You can always come back to it later if you change your mind. But, if you want to monetise your blog using ads and affiliate links on your page, and/or cultivate a community of like-minded people who love cooking or animals or [insert niche] the way you do, then this is a big step that could actually be a whole other blog post (might work on that soon 👀).
There are several ways of doing this. Firstly, any website will be searchable on Google. So, you can start looking into SEO to help it gain views (search engine optimisation). Or, you could use other apps or social media. For instance, Pinterest is a great way to get traffic onto your blog. It uses its own little (big) SEO because it’s a search engine, unlike Tik Tok or Instagram where you’re just being shown very fresh content without actually searching for something all the time. Pinterest does have a feed page, but it’s mostly built on your previous searches which is different from other platforms. You can start making pins using Canva here, and post frequently to gain traction to your blog posts. I also highly recommend the Profitable Pin Formula for Pinterest Success with Serena if you really want to figure it all out!

In my opinion, everyone should have a blog - from small businesses to people just documenting their hobbies. All I wanted to do for a long time was make some money working from home. And if I’m being honest, I didn’t want to just do my day job from home. I longed for something where I was my own boss, maybe with some hints of creativity involved. I tried everything from writing fancy resumes for people, social media YouTube and Tik Tok (which I still do), and network marketing. But for some reason, I didn’t feel completely happy with those options. It felt like it still wasn’t quite right - and then I found blogging.
The great thing about blogging was that I could show up to blogging day and night, which was perfect for me with a new baby who doesn’t sleep in her cot overnight. Because I was awake feeding and having her sleep in my arms (anyone else have a clingy koala?), blogging was a perfect way for me to spend my time. Whereas YouTube and social media? Well I had to be prepared to put my face out there and be in the right energy all the time despite feeling beyond exhausted. But blogging I could do!
I’m sure you’re wondering, okay that sounds cool but. Are blogs even doing anything these days?? Do people still do it? It seems like such an old thing (which I honestly don't get why that is). But just think about it - even this very website you’re reading right now is in fact a blog!! And bloggers are still out there monetising their blogs, with some doing it as a side hustle, and others doing it full time. Honestly, sky is the limit with blogs as you’ll see in step 4! Any time you google a recipe or how to get your baby to sleep, that’s a blog you’re reading!
Another great way is Facebook by making a Facebook page with your branding on it. Facebook is great in other ways, because you can pay for advertising, and gain followers or likes onto your page. You can add your website to your bio, and directly link people to your blog posts using photos or posts with captions or even reels.
And finally, Instagram is great, too! If you want to complement your blog with reel posts, you could also gain a following there and cultivate a community and link your website into your bio or onto your stories for people to find it and have a read. A great example of this is newsletter pages like E! News.
BONUS STEP
If you want to take this further, and make this into a monetised side hustle or even your full time gig, there’s actually quite a bit you’ll need to know that you don't want to miss. I highly recommend Fin Savvy Panda’s Treasure Map To Blogging Success in 30 days! Her guide is an absolute gold mine, it gives you so much detail and guidance, all able to be done easily within 30 days. It didn’t even take me that long, and honestly - I’d be lost without the small details she gives and I’d probably feel like I’d have to start all over again if I hadn’t used it!
I really hope I’ve inspired you today! I honestly think the world would be a better place if we all had our own monetised blogs and could work part time haha.
